RW/SL Integration Tutorial at OSCON 2007

This page is to provide background information for attendees of the Second Life Integration tutorial at OSCON 2007.

Schedule

The tutorial will run from 8:30am to 12 noon on Monday July 23rd as two 90 minute sessions with a 30 minute break in the middle. More information at http://conferences.oreillynet.com/cs/os2007/view/e_sess/13050

Inquiries

If you have any questions please contact the tutorial presenter, Jonathan Oxer, on jon@oxer.com.au.

What to do before the tutorial

If you want to participate in the practical exercises involving Second Life scripting please register an account with Second Life prior to attending the tutorial. Basic SL accounts are free and client software is available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. You can register with Second Life online at www.secondlife.com.

What to bring

To make the tutorial as hands-on as possible you are welcome to bring a laptop computer with the latest Second Life client installed. New clients are released frequently and most updates to the grid force you to upgrade to the latest client so please check secondlife.com/community/downloads.php just prior to attending the tutorial. Due to bandwidth constraints and the number of participants running the client it may not actually be possible for everyone to try the Second Life examples at once, but we'll see how we go!

If you already own an Arduino board please feel free to bring it along so you can follow along with the hardware demonstrations. Unfortunately participants will not receive their Arduino starter kits until after the event, so unless you already own one and have the IDE installed it won't be possible to try the demonstrations on the spot.

What you will receive on the day

When you check in at the registration desk prior to the tutorial you will be given a hard copy of an early draft of "Real World / Second Life Integration", which will form the basis of the tutorial.

I will also bring CD-ROMs for every participant containing:
  • a PDF of the latest draft of the "Real World / Second Life Integration" book
  • the latest Second Life client installers for Linux, Windows, and MacOS
  • source code examples for the LSL scripts that will be demonstrated
  • the latest Arduino IDE installer for Linux, Windows, and MacOS
  • source code examples for the Arduino programs that will be demonstrated
  • source code for various other C, PHP, and Perl demonstration programs

What you will receive afterwards

Due to some unfortunate scheduling issues it hasn't been possible to have the Arduino starter kits delivered from Italy in time to distribute to tutorial participants on the day. Instead I'm working on having the kits shipped directly to participants as soon as possible after the conference. I may need to collect postal addresses from participants to allow this to happen, but we'll just have to see how it works out.

Post-tutorial information

Hopefully the tutorial will just be the start of the adventure. I've created this site as a central resource for additional information and discussion after the conference, and also created a group in Second Life called "Second Life Integration" to make it easier to arrange in-world meetups and discussion. Please check back on this site after the tutorial for more news and information.

Cheers   :-)
